MATRIX ANALYSIS TEST 1 MSC STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING FIRST SEMESTER ACADEMIC YEAR 2011-2012 DATE: 22 NOVEMEBR 2011 TEST

DURATION 2:00HRS Answer all questions Using matrix displacement method for structural analysis and assume A= 25 cm2 and E=2x104kN/cm2 for all members: A- Evaluate all members forces and supportsreactions of truss shown in Fig.1 using matrix displacement method if 500kN Load is applied downwards onto joint 1 and 400 kN onto joint 2 rightwards. B- Calculate global nodal forces in kN corresponding to degrees of freedoms @ joints 1 and 2 if Member 5 is made 1.00 cm too long and the temperature of member 2 is raised by 50oC. Take thermal coefficient = per o C. C- Calculate global nodal forces in kN corresponding to degrees of freedoms @ joints 1 & 2 if support 3 settled (i.e moved downwards) 0.375cm Hint: If using holistic approach of assembling static matrix (A) and deformation matrix (B) for the whole structure please assemble A & B independently. Besides the benefit of double checking your derivation you can also assemble BR=ART (for support settlement) from the same equations used for constructing B.
