There are different rules for the formation of superlatives, depending on the number of syllables of the adjective you

are using: 1 SYLLABLE: ADJECTIVE + EST: short shortest Ex: Jack is the shortest boy in class. 2 OR MORE SYLLABLES: MOST + ADJECTIVE: intelligent the most intelligent Ex: Ann is the most intelligent student in class.

REMEMBER: adjectives ending in e only add ST. Ex: wide widest adjectives ending in CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) have the last consonant doubled before adding EST. Ex: hot hottest 2 syllable adjectives ending in consonant + y, have the y changed into I and add EST. happy happiest
