Main Characters The Brawley Family The Brawley's family is a poor family who lives in South Carolina.

Joseph: The father of the family. His name is not listed in the story but he died when his children were young. He died in the factory in the North while he was working. He could not find any available jobs in the South because of the slavery. Susan: The mother of the family. Not very important in the story. However, after her husband died, her body weakened because of stress. She could not find any job because of slavery and her body could not handle the job. She depends on her children to make money for the family's living. Mary: 19 years old girl. Not very important in the story either. However, she take cares of her mother. Jonathan: The main character of the story. The elder brother among siblings. Jonathan and his younger brother tries to find a job to support their family. Later, they both go into the army when Civil War begins because it was the only way to make enough money for their living. He believes that he is responsible for the family. Jonathan is strong-willed 22 years old man Hunter: The main character and a story teller of the story. 17 years old boy who had to give up his education because of economic issues. Hunter joins the army with his brother, Jonathan. He is not aware of the war nor the cruelty of the world. Hunter experiences the despair of the war.
