Radio KCRW Los Angeles, CA 01/30/12 07:34 AM KCRW 89.9 News High Desert Corridor

07:34:17 Chery Glaser, Anchor: You may think Southern California has enough freeways as it is, but theres talk about adding another one. A series of meetings is being held to get community input on whats being called the High Desert Corridor. It would create a kind of ring road around the L.A. Basin, linking Bakersfield with the 14 through Lancaster and Palmdale, on out to the I-15 in Victorville. It would serve local drivers as well as truckers shipping produce from the Central Valley. But doesnt this area already have highways? Doug Failing with L.A. Countys Metropolitan Transportation Authority says, not really. 07:34:49 Doug Failing, Director of Highway Programs, Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority: The 58 between the 14 and 15 is primarily a two-lane route, one lane each direction. The 138 for most of its history from the 14 to the 15 has been a two-lane route. 07:35:01 Glaser: Plus, these roads have stop signs and traffic lights, and in many cases, run through peoples neighborhoods. Failing says in addition to helping relieve congestion, the High Desert Corridor could also have a renewable energy component to it, with the MTA perhaps putting up wind turbines or solar panels alongside the freeway. 07:35:20 Failing: So, part of this project, were actually looking at creating a green corridor where we can generate renewable energy within the corridor itself, but also create the possibility so that other types of green, solar or wind generation projects will be able to bring their energy into the grid as well.
