Fast Facts on Perth and Western Australia

Airport Perth International Airport is 18 kilometres from the city centre. Business Hours Standard business hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Climate Perth has an average of eight hours sunshine a day. Summer is hot with an average temperature of 29 degrees Celsius (C) during the day and 17C at night. Winter is from June to August and is mild, with an average temperature of 18C during the day, and 9C at night. Clothing Lightweight suits are the trend for business clothes. Casual dress is worn on all other occassions. Credit Cards Credit cards are acceptable in Perth. The most common are Visa, MasterCard, Bankcard, American Express and Diners Club. Currency The currency that is used is the Australian Dollar (AUD). The denominations are $100, $50, $20, $10 and $5 notes, and coins, $2, $1, 50, 20, 10, and 5. Electricity The normal current is 220-240 volts AC; 50Hz. The three pin power outlet is different from many countries including Asia. It is recommended to look for an Australian adaptor socket. Ethnic Groups At the 2006 Australian Census, 27.14 per cent of Western Australias total population were migrants. The largest migrant groups (by percentage of total WA population) were: British (10.6%) Germany (0.5%) Indian (0.8%) Italian (1.1%) Malaysian (1.0%) Netherlands (0.5%) New Zealand (2.4%) Singaporean (0.6%) South African (1.1%) Vietnam (0.5%)

Government Australia is a democratic, federal-state system, and a member of the British Commonwealth. Three bodies established by the Australian Constitution - Parliament (legislative), Commonwealth Executive (executive) and Federal Judicature (judicial powers) - make Australia a constitutional monarchy, a federation and a parliamentary democracy. Health Risks The sun is very intense. Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are recommended even on cloudy days. Languages English is the widely used language. However, because of the European and Asian immigrant population there is a wide range of other languages spoken such as Italian, Malay and Chinese.

Time Zone Local time is 8 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. Daylight saving was introduced in Western Australia for a three-year trial period starting December 2006. A referendum will be held in 2009 to decide whether it should become permanent. In 2008, daylight saving will begin at 2am Western Standard Time on the last Sunday in October, and end at 2am Western Standard Time (3am summer time) on the last Sunday in March 2009. Tipping It is not customary to give tips in Perth. It is up to the individual to decide whether they would like to provide a tip. If you do, it is suggested that between 5 and 10 per cent is sufficient.

Australian Visa Information

To enter Australia, you must obtain an Australian visa by completing a Visa Application Form. Tourist and Business Visitor visas are available as an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA). Visitors should apply for an ETA at least two weeks before their visit through a travel agent, international airlines, an overseas Australian diplomatic office or online from the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship website: www.eta.immi.gov.au If you do not hold a passport suitable for ETA, you will need to apply for a label visa from Australian Embassies, High Commissions or Consulates overseas. To make a valid application for a visa for Australia, you must: Indicate the type or class of visa you want; Use the correct form; Pay the required charge; Provide the correct documentation in support of your application; Satisfy all requirements for the visa you are applying for; and Send or deliver your application to an Australian diplomatic office overseas. Each person with their own passport must complete a visa application. Tourist and ETA visas are valid for three months. Visitor visas are usually valid for one year for multiple journeys to Australia. You can apply for a visa allowing multiple travel for up to four years, with a stay of three or six months on each visit. Public Transport
Peth has a network of trains and buses that service the metropolitan region. All of the buses and trains connect to the Perth City Central Business District (CBD). Bus tickets are available on buses from the bus driver, while train tickets are available at train stations. Only public transport within the Perth City CBD is free. International Education for Overseas Muslim Students

Western Australia has a long tradition of welcoming international Muslim students from around the globe. Whether studying at university, college, secondary or primary school, all Western Australian institutions provide a strong and supportive environment to those with Islamic values. There are several Islamic primary and secondary schools which provide high quality education with a strong focus on Islamic studies.
