Word st udy is…

 The integration of spelling, phonics, and


vocabulary into reading and writing.
 The help for a students understanding of
the meaning, structures and sounds of
words, which they can then apply to new
words they may encounter.
 An activity that should be a party of
everyday spelling program.

 Teachers use clusters or webs to relate


words
 Younger students can make a map of
words that relate to the topic of study
(like BIOlogy)
 Older students need and understand of
how the words relate

 Used to record ideas and words on topics
 Teacher models writing on the graphic
organizer, and establishes the importance of
their ideas
 Graphic organizers can be added to over time,
as students find more words that relate to each
other
 Can be in the form of: alphabet, t-charts, venn
diagrams, flow charts, and post-its.

Journals
 Useful in second through forth grades for
conventional and fifth through tenth for
morphemic and syntactic.
 Word journals are for words that the students
learn how to spell and use properly.
 Students will use their journal/dictionary to
come back to for a reference over time.

Word Sort s
 The sorting of words into categories
 Shows students how words are alike or
different
 Use the knowledge they already know to gain
more knowledge about word patterns
 Can be used by: open sorts, closed sorts, word
searches, or word constructions.
 Good use in k-3 grade with picture sorts, and
5-8 grades for word searches.
