Dear Candidate, On behalf of the University of Lethbridge, I would like to commend you on your decision to run for provincial office. Your willingness to serve the public in this capacity is admirable. While the U of L strives to serve Southern Alberta students, over 70 per cent of our current enrolment resides from outside of the Lethbridge area. The University of Lethbridge is a destination university that serves all corners of this province. I have attached a map that illustrates, by provincial electoral district, the number of Alberta-based students and families that choose the U of L. The U of L is recognized for its high-quality teaching and research activities (ranked 4th of 22 institutions across Canada in the Macleans rankings for the past two years). Students benefit from smaller class sizes, research opportunities with leading faculty members at the undergraduate and graduate level, and a supportive student-centered learning environment. Many students from Alberta choose the U of L for these qualities, but also because it allows them to go-away to university while remaining in their province. Certainly having a destination university in Alberta is key to ensuring Alberta retains the talents of Albertans who look for a university experience away from where they grew up. Albertans are also well served by the U of L because of the world-renowned research that is undertaken by passionate and dedicated faculty members. Known especially for its leading water and neuroscience research, the U of L is playing an increasing role in the areas of health, agriculture and environment. Once again I would like to thank you for your willingness to serve. Sincerely, Michael J. Mahon, Ph.D. President and Vice-Chancellor
