Specifically, the evolution of chromosomes due to the action of crossover and mutation and natural selection of chromosomes based on Darwin's survival-of-the-fittest principles are all artificically simulated to constitute a robust search and optimization procedure. In this paper, a description of the working principles of GA search, its potential applications in science and engineering, and some theoretical analysis are presented. For the benefic of users of traditional search and optimization methods, the GA search is compared with a number of popular traditional methods and their differences in the working principles and applications domain are highlightened. Three different extensions of the basic GA search in solving multimodal, multiobjective, and continuous search space problems are discussed. Extensive references on the topic are appended so that interested readers can refer to more detailed description of various issues relating GA search.
