This evening (Wednesday April 11, 2012 @ 7pm in LH 2) there will be a MANDATORY EMERGENCY MEETING for ALL chapter

presidents. The university has received an alarmingly high number of serious hazing complaints this spring, and although many conversations have taken place to address the behavior in question, the reports continue to come in. We are extremely concerned about new member safety, as well as the futures of our current fraternity/ sorority members. Hazing poses a serious physical and psychological health risk to all involved, is a violation of the Code of Student Conduct and is also a crime punishable by state and federal law. In an effort to protect all students currently participating in fraternity/sorority life at Binghamton University, The institution is implementing a "Cease & Desist" order for all fraternities & sororities. All pledging/ new member education/ intake/ recruitment programs must end IMMEDIATELY. This "Cease & Desist" order will remain in effect for the remainder of the Spring 2012 semester while the University investigates current and any subsequent reports of violations. Any violators will face disciplinary action on both an organizational and individual level. Under the Rules of Student Conduct, you, as presidents and other officers of your organizations may be held individually accountable as follows: 2. Student groups and organizations recognized administratively or by student government and/or their officers may also be charged with, and held responsible for violations of the Rules of Student Conduct. If, in the course of our investigations it is determined to be warranted, criminal charges will also be filed. We regret having to take such an extreme action, but student safety is paramount and we have a responsibility to handle dangerous situations once they have been brought to our attention. We expect you to attend the meeting tonight for further information regarding this decision and what it means for the future of fraternity/sorority life at Binghamton University.

Sincerely, Sunni L. Solomon II, M.S. Assistant Director of Greek Life, Dean of Students Office P.O.Box 6000 Binghamton, NY 13902-6000 (O) 607.777.2797 (F) 607.777.6486 ssolomon@binghamton.edu
