Properties: The strength of the Sp2 carbon-carbon bonds gives hardness for the carbon nano tubes.

The youngs modulus of the nanotubes is approximately 5 times greater than steel. The tensile strength is 50 times higher than steel.

The electronic properties of carbon nanotubes are also extraordinary. Especially the Caisson nanotubes can be obtained in the form of metallic or semiconducting, based on its structural content.
Nanotubes have higher conductivities than that of copper.

APPLICATION OF CARBON NONTUBES

The carbon nontubes are very light in weight, but they are very strong, hence they are used in aerospace. They are used in constructing nanoscale electronic devices. Carbon nano-tubes (CNTs) are used in battery electrodes, fuel cells, reinforcing fibers etc. CNTs are used in the development if flat panel displays for computer monitors and televisions.

Plastic Composite CNTs are also used as a light

weight shielding materials for protecting electromagnetic radiation.

Light weight CNTs are also used in military and communication systems, for protecting computers and electronic devices.

Semiconducting CNTs are used as switching

devices, Chemical sensors to detect various

gases.

Nano-tubes can also serve as catalysts for

some chemical reactions.

The unique properties of carbon nanotubes

will undoubtedly lead to many more

applications in future to produce nanocomputers, plastic composites etc.
