SAP Note 1031740 SAP Logon: C:\Windows\saplogon.ini has no effect in Vista...

Note Language: English Version: 8 Validity:

Valid Since 09.02.2010

Summary
Symptom
If SAP Logon is started by default, the saplogon.ini file under C:\Windows\saplogon.ini will be loaded by default (see note 38119). And if you maintain the system entries in SAP Logon like adding, changing and deleting a system entry, you should be able to see the changes in the file C:\Windows\saplogon.ini However this is not the case in Windows Vista and Windows 7 if UAC (User Account Control)is turned on. You can not see any changes in the file C:\Windows\saplogon.ini as the case in other Windows operating systems.

Other terms
Vista, Windows 7, User Account Control, UAC, SAP Logon

Reason and Prerequisites

The problem is due to the behavior changes in MS Windows system for modifying files under Windows directory when UAC is turned on. In this case (UAC on) a normal user can not change the files under Windows directory under Vista. In SAP Logon case, the saplogon.ini is under Windows directory by default (see note 38119). When saplogon.ini should be resaved due to system entries maintainace in SAP Logon by the user, Vista or Wondows 7 does not allow the file C:\Windows\saplogon.ini to be changed due to UAC. Instead Vista saves the new version of saplogon.ini to: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Windows\saplogon.ini After that reading or writing the original file C:\Windows\saplogon.ini will be always led to reading or writing the copied file by Vista or Windows 7. That means in this case the file C:\Windows\saplogon.ini can neither be overwritten nor reloaded even if SAP Logon is restarted. The copied file %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Windows\saplogon.ini will be always used by Vista or Windows 7.

Solution
Two Solutions can be applied (you are strongly recommended to apply the solution, so that you and your SAP Logon users can know exactly which INI file is used and can be modified in SAP Logon): 1. 2. Turn off UAC according to Windows help In case that UAC must be turned on: Find the new version of saplogon.ini under your Vista: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Windows\saplogon.ini Then set the environment variable SAPLOGON_INI_FILE to this file(see note 38119) or to a central file that can be modified by the user and start saplogon as before. Note: For an automated distribution of the workaround using a Front-End Installation Server please insert the scripting contained in attached text file "Vista_set_SAPLOGON_INI_FILE.txt" into the "On End
