Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamato. The idea was to lure the


American aircraft carriers remaining after the attack on Pearl Harbor
into a position where the Japanese naval forces would be strategically
advantaged to easily annihilate what was left of America’s strength at
sea. A series of intercepted Japanese code, however, revealed
Japan’s intentions to the Americans, allowing naval forces to prepare
for battle under the command of United States Admiral Chester Nimitz.
In the end, American forces sunk four Japanese carriers and one
destroyer, losing one carrier and one destroyer in the fighting. 3,057
Japanese were killed in the Battle of Midway, along with 307
Americans.
Had the Japanese been victorious at Midway, they would have gained
an immeasurably valuable foothold in the Pacific Theatre, providing
them with a wider circle of defense around their homeland and
enabling an inevitable invasion of Hawaii, ending any American
