Bell Ringer: write an example of classical conditioning that you have seen before, or something that you could try. Discuss students answers.

Introduce Operant Conditioning using the board. Have reinforcement and punishment written down. Have the students come up and do a chalk talk. They are allowed to write anything they want about either topic, but each student must write at least one thing. Discuss the students chalk talk. Pick out things that are true of each topic, and explain why. PowerPoint: discuss the definition of operant conditioning and its principles (positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, negative punishment). Then, discuss Thorndikes Law of Effect. Compare B.F. Skinners findings with Thorndikes findings and the operant conditioning chamber. Students will receive a worksheet that compares reinforcement and punishment. In the worksheet, students will need to define both punishment and reinforcement and indicate if specific examples are either punishment or reinforcement.
