Regatta Highlights: Saturdays racing saw a beautiful sunny day in New Jersey on the Toms River
for Day 1 of the MASSA Mallory Qualifier for the Schneider Trophy. The breeze came out of the
southeast at 8-12 knots for most of the day. At the end of the day, 10 races were completed in
each division and Toms River South from New Jersey was leading the highly competitive regatta.
On Sunday, the day started with light winds out of the north coming from the bluffs of Island
Heights. Teams faced heavy rain throughout the day. Congratulations to Christchurch School of
Virginia for winning the MASSA Spring Championships, Second place went to Severn School in Severna
Park, MD and third place went to Toms River South from New Jersey. The fourth team to qualify is
Archbishop Spalding from Annapolis. Good luck to all the teams from MASSA who will be heading to
Nationals in Washington on May 12-13, 2012.
We would like to thank PRO Rich Warren and his brother who ran a terrific regatta, Dr. Drew
Seibert, Rich Proko, and Dave Magno on Protests, Roy Wilkins, the on-the-water judge, Jody Lutz
and Jonathan Lutz from CBA as mark boat, John Paggi and especially Dr. Randy Nunn who organized
the race committee, boat breakdowns and his countless hours spent working on the new sails. Most
of all, we would like to acknowledge the Toms River Yacht Club, Island Heights Yacht Club, Ocean
County College, and the Island Heights Sailing Foundation for their continued support of high
school sailing over the past ten year. The growth of high school sailing in MASSA can be
attributed to the support given by local yacht clubs throughout district and to the countless
volunteers who make events like this happen.
