SCGA allows the user to find multiple solutions for a single optimization problem. The optimization was performed using a software called MoS and the model for optimization was created using FEM.

Optimization is a procedure that enables to find the best solution for a problem that allows multiple answers. By applying optimization to civil engineering problems, weight and cost of structures can be reduced. This project report will tackle the problem of topology optimization of truss structures for minimum weight using Species Conservation Genetic Algorithm. SCGA was proven to be effective in finding multiple solutions for multimodal problems, including problems deceptive for other optimization techniques. The optimization was performed using software that is based on SCGA. The truss models were created using Finite Element Method. To test the effectiveness of SCGA three different trusses were analysed, and results compared to the ones achieved in literature. The results show that SCGA is an effective algorithm to solve truss topology optimization problems because all achieved solutions are within 1% difference of the ones described in literature. The importance of FEM analysis when achieving solutions that are on the boundary of feasibility limits is shown.
