B.E (Fifth Semester) Mid Sem. Test-I Sep. 2010 DOM (ME 505)
Time: 2 Hours Note: Attempt any Two Questions from each unit. All questions Carry equal marks. UNIT-I Q1). a) Differentiate between the functions of a governor and a fly wheel. b) How different types of governors are classified? Explain the classifications tree. Q2). A porter governor has equal arms each 200mm long and pivoted on the axis of rotation. Each ball has a mass of 6 kg and the mass of the central load on the sleeve is 22 kg. The radius of the rotation of the ball is 120mm when the governor begins to lift and 200mm when the governor is at maximum speed. Find the range of the speed, sleeve lift, governor effort and power o the governor, when the friction at the sleeve is neglected. Q3). Explain the following terms in related to governors: i. Sensitiveness ii. Stability iii. Isochronous iv. hunting UNIT-II Maximum Marks: 20

Q4).

In a porter governor, the mass of the central load is 20 kg and the mass of each ball is 2 kg. The top arms are 200mm while the bottom arms are each 250mm long. The friction of the sleeve is 15N. if the top arms make 45o with the axis of rotation in the equilibrium position, find the rang of the speed of the governor in that position.

Q5). Define the following terms used in governors I. Height of the governor II. Equilibrium speed III. Mean equilibrium speed IV. Sleeve lift.

Q6). In a Hartnell Governor, the lengths of ball and sleeve arms of a bell crank lever are 120mm and 100mm respectively. The distance of the fulcrum bell crank lever from the governor axis is 140mm. each governor ball has a mass of 4 kg. The governor runs at a mean speed of 300 r.p.m. with the ball arms vertical and sleeve arms horizontal, for an increase of 4 percent. The sleeve moves 1omm upwards. Neglecting friction, find i. The minimum equilibrium speed if the total sleeve movement is limited to 20mm. ii. The spring stiffness iii. The sensitiveness of the governor and iv. The spring stiffness if the governor is to be isochronous at 300 r.p.m
