    Aplastic anemia can be caused by inherited conditions like Fanconi's syndrome or acquired factors. Approximately 65% of acquired cases are idiopathic, while chemical substances like alkylating agents, antimetabolites, and inorganic arsenicals can cause aplastic anemia in a dose-dependent and reversible manner. Some substances like phenylbutazone and streptomycin can cause aplastic anemia idiosyncratically from even small doses in a non-predictable and non-reversible way. Physical factors like radiation and certain viruses such as hepatitis and EBV can also lead to aplastic anemia.
