This voltmeter is measuring the energy the battery provides to the electric current as it passes through.

One volt gives each coulomb one joule.

We can use the voltmeter and ammeter readings together to calculate the resistance. Resistance(ohms) = Voltage Current Key equations In symbols R = V I ohms R=V I Q=Ixt

An ammeter measures the current in amperes (or amps),which is the same as the number of coulombs per second One amp is a ow of one coulomb per second, so: Current (in amps) = total charge (coulombs) time (seconds) amps in symbols I = Q t

E=VxQ

E=VxIxt

This voltmeter measures the amount of electrical energy converted into heat inside the resistor. If it reads 1 volt then each coulomb gives 1 joule of energy: so energy(joules) = voltage(volts) x charge (coulombs) in symbols: E = V x Q and since Q=I x t then E = V x I x t

Electricity is a ow of very small charged particles called electrons. They are so small we dont count them individually but we count them in big groups. One coulomb is a group of about 625000000000000000000000 electrons. (not a number to remember!) There is a simple connection between the current in amps and the charge in coulombs: 1 amp is 1 coulomb per second
