The role of Geoscience Australia in the Oil and Gas industry

Geoscience Australia is a national agency that undertakes geoscience research and develops, maintains and provides access to a wide range of geospatial information, like about the land and marine jurisdiction; and information on ground water, natural hazards and risks. It helps the government and industry to make informed decisions on the economic, social, and environmental management of the nations oil and gas resources. Geoscience Australia is a part of the department of Resources, Energy and Tourism (DRET). It was formed when the former Australian Geological Survey Organization (AGSO) and the Australian Survey and Land Information Group (AUSLIG) merged in 2001. Some of its Geoscience Australias long term roles Institutional change within the Australian Government. Changing Government priorities and policies, like the climate change debate, or new requirements for geoscientific information to improve understanding of Australias natural environment. The Petroleum and Marine division of Geoscience Australia focuses on analysis of the petroleum potential of Australias frontier basins. This work is aimed at attracting petroleum exploration investment to sustain oil and gas supplies for the future. They also provide technical advice to Government and industry on Australias petroleum prospects, reserves and potential. This division also has a role in studying the potential for the storage of CO2 underground as to reduce the amount to CO2 released into the atmosphere.
