Acid Gas Removal Carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide are two acidic contaminants that must be removed

prior to sale. These acidic gases can cause corrosion and are the source of many maintenance issues in pipelines. The sulfur can also be extracted and marketed as its own product, however, the scope of this project does not include this aspect. It should be noted that the given concentration of hydrogen sulfide from the wellhead is already below the specified requirement. However, if the level is further reduced, it would be possible to use lower grade metal equipment that may significantly decrease capital cost. This gas sweetening process can be accomplished in a number of manners. The most populous method utilized is known as the amine process, and is used in 95% of U.S. gas sweetening operations. Two principle amine solutions are Monoethanolamine (MEA) or diethanolamine (DEA), both of which adsorb acid gas. The choice of solvent may depend on specific envelopes of pressure, temperature and acid gas concentration. The necessary components in this process include a high-pressure adsorber contactor, low-pressure stripper, high-pressure pumps, cross heat exchangers. Additional methods of acid gas removal include molecular sieves and membrane systems. Molecular sieves utilize specific zeolites in order to capture various impurities.
