LISTENING
Listen to the dialogue between Albert and Hiroki. (Tutor reads the dialogue with proper intonation and correct pronunciation).

A = Albert

H= Hiroki

A: God morning and welcome to Changing Cultures our weekly look at ideas and beliefs from around the world. On last weeks program, Hiroki Ikeda, a computer analyst from Japan, agreed to try out some of the ideas behind Feng Shui. Welcome back Hiroki. H: Thanks. Its nice to be here. A: So Hiroki how did you get on? Has your life changed at all?

H: Well, I dont think Feng Shui has changed my life. Not yet anyway! But Ive already tried one or two of the ideas from the article. For example Ive just started running every morning and I feel a whole lot better!
A: Well fitness instructors have been telling us to do this for years!

LISTENING
H: Well actually, I already owned a couple of goldfish, but they never brought me much luck! Seriously though, I think some of the ideas in Feng Shui are really interesting. This thing about wearing grey, for example. I usually wear a lot of grey clothes you know for work and so on, but Ive just bought myself a new black suit and I feel much more decisive when I wear it. A: Really? Yes, black does look very professional. So how about cleaning your home and place of work every day are you a clean person Hiroki? H: Not at all, no! Now that is something Im going to try and do. Ive already cleaned up my desk at work, it really helped me concentrate but Im afraid I havent started on the house yet. You see Ive got two young kids, and my wife works too, so its pretty hard to keep things clean. A: Thanks Hiroki. So listeners, what do you think? Has Feng Shui worked for you? Do you believe in it? Call us now on 0810-733-933 and tell us your views.

GRAMMAR FOCUS
You can use the present perfect with just, already and yet.

Just
Just has several meanings. Just often emphasizes the idea of 'at this moment' or 'close to the present'.
Examples: 1. I'll be down in a minute - I'm just changing my shirt. (= right now)

2. Alice has just phoned. (= a short time ago)

3. Keith's still around. I saw him just last week. (= as recently as) 4. Are you hungry? No, Ive just have lunch. (= a short time ago) 5. Hello. Have you just arrived? (= a short time ago)
Note: The tutor may ask the student to read the examples. 7

GLOBAL ENGLISH INTERMEDIATE LESSON NO. 1 In expressions like just after, just before and just when, just suggests closeness to the time in question. Examples: 1. I saw him just after lunch. (= ... very soon after lunch.) 2. The party will start just after sunset. 3. The incident happened just when he was about to leave their office.

Already

Already is used to say that something has happened earlier than expected, or earlier than it might have happened Examples: 1. When's Sally going to come? ~ She's already here. 2. You must go to Okinawa. ~ I've already been. 3. Have you already finished? That was quick! 4. Dont forget to send the letter. Ive already sent it. 5.What time is Ren leaving? Hes already gone.

GLOBAL ENGLISH INTERMEDIATE LESSON NO. 1 Already usually goes with the verb, in 'mid-position'. It can also go at the end of a clause, for emphasis.

Example: 1. Are you here already? You must have run all the way.
We do not usually put already before time expressions. Examples: 1. When I was fourteen I already knew that I wanted to be a doctor. (NOT Already when 1was fourteen ... ) 2. In 1970 Britain's car industry was already in serious trouble. (NOT Already in 1970. . .)

GLOBAL ENGLISH INTERMEDIATE LESSON NO. 1

Yet Not yet is used to say that something which is expected has not happened
(but we think that it will).
Examples: 1. Is Sally here? ~ Not yet. 2. The postman hasn't come yet. 3. Ive written the letter, but I havent sent it yet. In questions, we use yet to ask whether something expected has happened. Examples: 1. Is supper ready yet? 2. Has the postman come yet? 3. Has it stopped raining yet?

10

GLOBAL ENGLISH INTERMEDIATE LESSON NO. 1 Yet usually goes at the end of a clause, but it can go immediately after not in a formal style.

Examples:
1. Don't eat the pears - they aren't ripe yet. 2. The pears are not yet ripe. (more formal)

yet or already in questions

Questions with already often suggest that something has happened. Compare Examples:

1. Have you met Professor Akiyama yet? (= I don't know whether you've met him.) Have you already met Professor Akiyama? (= I think you've probably met him.)
2. Is my coat dry yet? Is my coat dry already? That was quick!

Directions: Read the article below and answer the questions that follow.
Todays Words: happiness, good health, calmness, success, noise, wealth, peace, worry, good luck

Want to change your life but dont know how? Is Feng Shui the answer? Feng Shui is a very old Chinese idea for a healthy, happy and successful life. Read on for some advice:

Take up a sport or start going to the park every day. Make sure you get some fresh air during the day. Start your day with a glass of water, you will feel more lively. Buy a fish tank- fish are considered lucky, so you may even become wealthy! Clean your home and your place of work every day and put all your waste outside. Use plants to create a calm air at home or work. Stop wearing grey clothes. Grey is neither black nor white it is a sign of confusion. Try to avoid worrying situations like crowded streets and noisy traffic.
Remember: With Feng Shui, you do not expect the future, you change it.
