Homework.
1. What are the two main ways you can discover the level of Reading ability of new students? Get information from the previous teacher and organize reading records that are passed from one class to the next. A placement test (provides that students are not completely beginners)
2. Is regular formal testing recommended for extensive reading? Explain. No, it is not recommended because everyone reads different books and the progress of each student is only measurable over an extensive period of time.
3. What are some of the things teacher can do for remedial work with students who turn out to read very badly? Provide them with a lot of easy material. Language experience approach where the teachers and students prepare the materials together. Paired reading where students work in pairs on a variety of tasks. Reciprocal reading where the student gradually takes over the teachers role (questioning, summarizing and predicting).
4. What are reading cards and reading laboratories? How can they be used? Reading cards: are texts with questions or other tasks, printed on a card which can be stored with others in a box file, filing cabinet, etc. Reading laboratory: is a collection of reading cards, graded in level and intended to be used systematically to improve reading skills. Reading cards and reading laboratory are used independently of the teacher and can be borrowed like graded readers, they are ideal for any student who is far below or above the level of the others, they can also be used to check students work in their readings.
