Module 3: Assessing Pre-Reading

Evaluation:
Identify what is referred to by each of the following statements? Choose the letter
that corresponds to your answer.

1. It knows that the same letter can look different, that letters have names and are
related to sounds.
a. letter knowledge b. decoding c. reading comprehension d. fluency

2. It is the process of translating print into speech by rapidly matching a letter or

combination of letters (graphemes) to their sounds (phonemes) and recognizing the
patterns that make syllables and words.
a. Reading comprehension b. phonemic awareness c. decoding d. fluency

3. It is the understanding and comprehension of what is read.

Decoding b. reading comprehension c. fluency d. letter knowledge

4. It is the ability to recognize words automatically without struggling over decoding issues.
Phonemic awareness b. decoding c. letter knowledge d. fluency

5. It is the ability to identify and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words.

Reading comprehension b. fluency c. decoding d. phonemic awareness
B. Answer the following briefly, but comprehensively.

1. A look back: Look back at your own pre-reading experience when you were in basic
education. From the different assessment strategies mentioned above, which ones did
your teacher frequently use? Were these strategies? How did you know that?

During my basic education, my teacher used pre reading strategy was letter
knowledge and phonemic awareness, she used this strategy for us to be able to identify
what word it is just like for example she shown us a picture cards with letters and gave
us a one word like A stands for Apple, B stands for Ball and so on. My teacher really
knows what make us more interesting in lesson and she also know how to get out
attention that days because, definitely as a teacher they should know how to make their
student learned and they should be more prepared for what they are about to read. It
really helps us anticipate the topic of the reading. In doing this, it can also prepare
ourselves for the kind of language, vocabulary, and even grammar that might be used in
the text.
2. Feelings about reading: Do you feel any difference in classes where your teacher did
pre-reading assessment activities and in classes where there were none? Please
describe.
I can say that there is really a big difference with and without pre reading
strategy cause this strategy can motivate and increase student comprehension and help to
active the prior knowledge of the student and it's essential for student abilities to
comprehend instructional level of text and provide a unique opportunity to each student
or readers to improve their reading comprehension.
3. Skill Learning: Design at least two (2) interactive activities that you could do to
assess your future students’ pre-reading skills in each of the following areas.

Letter knowledge

Sing alphabet
Sing the alphabet song to your kids when they are very young. When
they get a bit older, they will naturally start singing along
*Associate letter with name
Let your children know the name of a word .for example letter C what name
associate with letter C?

>Phonemic awareness
*Name the object
Assemble the each word and let your kids combine a word, any words that
made of their mind
*Repeat after me
In this activity we can identify if the student listen to the teacher. Teacher
read any word and let the kids repeat whatever she/he said.

>Decoding
*Word puzzle
Assemble the letters and let your children come up a different word
whatever comes to their mind.
*Draw what's on your mind
Ask them to create an image that has meaning to them that goes with the
word they’re learning. Even creating an image in their head has benefit, but
asking them to draw an image around a word on paper can be more fun—
and more valuable.

>Fluency
*Read it loud
Make a poem or text and let your students read it aloud using music to
identify the fluency of the students

* Sentence trees
Sentence trees are terrific for building fluency in younger readers. They
allow kids to focus on each word, improving accuracy and speed along the
way.

>Reading comprehension
* Matches word
Let students read a story book that they usually read and favourite to read ,it's
important that they already know the sense of the story to help them in the
activity , after reading a story let your students match a word according to the
story they read , to identify if they really understand the story.
* Picture out
Let your students read a story book with a picture then let your student
explain what the picture impart to a reader. And ask them how it reflect t o
their self.

Synthesizing: Come up with a synthesis of the salient content of this module

focusing on the importance of pre-reading assessment.
In a period of just few months, the Covid-19 pandemic caused by coronavirus has
radically transformed the lives of all people around the world, including students. All learners
required to stay at home for us to be safe and free from viruses. Modular are implemented due
to the strictly prohibited to go school for us to be able to continue our studies, DepEd
implement modular and online learning. Module structure important and provides us an aid
to continue our studies despite of this pandemic ,even though it's hard for us to come up the
idea about the topic ,however were thankful that some teachers do understand the situation
of each students because of lack of necessities in online learning like gadgets, and the most
important is the internet connection those people whose far or living in the mountainous area
, I've feel the same as them because ,it's really hard to find a better connection. And even we
are using modular we also need a connection. The importance of pre reading assessment
helps us to understand and influence the motivation of a learner and help to increase the
activation of prior knowledge.

MODULE 4
A. Identify what is referred to by each of the following statements. Choose the

B

10. The level of comprehension that requires the reader to move beyond the text to
consider what they think and believe in relation to the message in the text.
a. appreciative b. evaluative c. inferential d. literal

B. Answer the following briefly, but comprehensively.

1. Based on your own understanding and using your own words, discuss the three
reading models.
The three reading models are must important in the process of reading comprehension.
Top-down is the process by which we are using our experiences and the ability to
understand information that appears in the context. It's also allow readers to construct a
meaning from the text, this knowledge is made from the whole text , it does not focuses on
the phonemic and decoding of a text but it allows a readers to read the real situation into
the currents event. Bottom-up is the process of understanding the text by just looking at
the individual meaning or grammatical characteristics of the text, it focuses on giving the
results of what have read. By this strategies help to understand the specific text and
influence the readers to the world of knowledge. Interactive models influence the reading
comprehension of people and it help in reading instruction , there are some concept that
most important to shape the comprehension process of reading, reading , and text . This
two concept contribute how will the reader understand the text . Comprehension occurs
among the readers and text , readers bring a different characteristics when they approach
the text ,they start reading with their prior knowledge ,it also bring motivation in reading.
Text readers interact with text when they tried to undersand them , text have a feature that
can help in comprehension and it has a topic in text and the style of the text that make a
readers interest in some kind of text and show you engage in the text . Over all teaching
literacy cannot be based on single theiry, once can argue that there are different theories
which can effectively supplement one another .

2. Look back at your own reading experience. Of the three models – top-down,
bottom-up, and interactive, which do you use most of the time? What do you think
is the reason behind this frequent use?

Through my journey in this world I frequently used interactive which really

effective in communication. This strategy helps us give and receive the feedback
information from other. Communication is one of the important tools that aid us to
connect with people. Either you are a student or a working professional, good
communication is something that will connect you far ahead. It does also help us to
solve a number of issues and resolve problems. The skills of communication essential to
be developed so that you are able to interact with people. And able to share your
thoughts and reach out to them. All this needs the correct guidance and self-analysis
as well.

3. What role/s does schema play in your ability to comprehend text?

Schema has a vital role in the cognitive process, it provide the direction in
constructing the meaning of the text it also help us to interpret different kind of text
for us to be able to make clear or understandable a text . Understanding what
knowledge they bring to the text via their schema, would also help to evaluate their
comprehension.

4. using your own words, define comprehension. What are the different levels of
comprehension and what are the salient features of each level?
Comprehension is what you understand on a certain topic or event. There are different
level of comprehension first, literal is what directly the meaning of the text or the actual
meaning, this is the most basic level of comprehension. Second inferential comprehension is
what you are going to go deeper to the meaning a certain text that need a conclusion.
Evaluative it is the process of understanding that we go beyond the text and thinking what
the relation of the message to the text. It also requires more understanding and
interpretation in making meaning of the text .appreciate level of comprehension it is the
process of comprehension what is your reaction based on the text that you have read and
knowing what the purpose of an author in writing a different text.

5. What have you learned from this module that you could use when you teach students
how to read?
Learning to read is a complex process that doesn't happen on its own. The best way to
teach kids to read is by making it fun. It’s a complex one that requires the proper teaching of
various skills and strategies, such as phonics (knowing the relationship between letters and
sounds) and phonemic awareness. It's important to teach the kids how to decode and read
words and by creating printed cards it helps to children to have a connection between the
sounds and letter symbols. using a different strategies that suit to the ability of the students
that help them to improve their ability in learning, I will teach them how to use a proper
comprehension in the text or word to avoid misunderstanding and for them to communicate
well to other people , it's important that we always remember that in teaching how to read
has a various skill, such as the ability to manipulate the different sounds, understanding the
meaning of the words, knowing the connection between sounds and letters .
