Materials: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Scrap paper Pencils/erasers Black Sharpies 12x18 white drawing paper Markers Teacher examples a. Drawn name-stack b. Types of line c. Sample patterns

Warm-up: LINE-an important element of art. Look around the room. Do you see any lines? On scrap paper, practice different lines. See what happens when you repeat lines. Crazy patterns? Who can come up with the most unique line/pattern? Procedure 1. Starting with the first letter of your name, draw it large and in a block-letter format. The paper should be VERTICAL. The letter can be placed anywhere on the bottom of the page, and at any angle. Think about this as the foundation for the pile of letters that is to follow. 2. Continuing up the page, draw the different letters that occur in your name. Letters do not have to be in spelling order. Letters can be repeated as many times as you like. Rotate the page to help you draw them at different angles. Think about the letter having weight and resting on the letters below. Each letter should be in block-format. Letters can overlap. The end goal is a pyramid of stacked letters. 3. Outline letters in black sharpies 4. Color the insides of the letters with marker. Any colors can be used. 5. Notice the shapes left in the white space. Inside this space (the negative space), draw your patters in black sharpie. Each shape should have a different pattern. Conclusion: Look at each persons name-stack and notice the different patterns within the letters. Discuss lines and patterns again, repeat how they are all around us. Display artwork.
