A prolific author, accomplished historian and artist Remembered for his speeches and his Bulldog tenacity Not a natural-born orator. He suffered from both a slight stammer and a lisp: speech impediments that often led to him to bed accused of being the worse.

Analysis of Speech

Delivered on Bastille Day, July 14, 1940. This speech covers the British naval action against the French fleet at Oran in which they put the French fleet out of action for fear that that may fall under German control. For Churchill, a large Francophile, this had been a painful, though necessary decision. During the height of Summer in 1940, the threat of German invasion hung over every Briton. This speech was broadcast to the nation via the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). Throughout his speech, Churchill attempts to reassure the French population of eventual liberation and an end to Hitlers reign.
