CLOSER LOOK: The last horse to win the Derby from the fence was Ferdinand in 1986; impressive in the Dubai win in the big field, but he will be in the gate for a long time; the fact that O'Brien has the confidence to send
him back here speaks volumes; only one poor effort and he was wide that day vs. Hansen; he has the breeding to handle the dirt and the feeling is he will thrive at the distance; just might be the bomb in the gimmicks.

Speed plays are nice and all that, but not in this Classic when only successful at 7 furlongs; sure, he'll give those scattered backers a brief thrill but it will be shocking if he is anywhere near the leaders turning for the wire;
only a handful of runners have gone all the way in this race and they were already proven routers; he may even help the other speed runners if they can resist the temptation chase after this guy they could inherit the lead
without being asked for all that much; if he has the lead at the mile marker, it will be surprising.

at Hawthorne; the place horse in last returned to run out of the money in the Lexington on 4/21; as far as his blood is concerned, he's by a Derby runner-up and his dam's wire won the BC Classic twice; consistency is his
calling card as he tries to become the second Empire-bred to win this race, joining Funny Cide; could very well slip into the gimmick if everything breaks right.

Colt showed a new dimension coming from a bit off the pace in the Gotham but there is plenty of speed to go with him here; he also came home solidly in the Blue Grass but the real question is can he take the heat of a
projected sizzling pace and still be around to talk about it?; not sure how much he really got out of the Blue Grass either; runner is very game, but the race doesn't seem to set up perfectly for his preferred style.

At least he improved a bit last time; left with too much work to do in both of the efforts this year, he basically got good for about 10 weeks or so last year; he does have the two races to draw from now and the real estate
figures to help; he will likely need the race of his life to have any shot at glory and his one big payday came in a trumped up race at Delta when he kind of got a set up; dusted when losing ground in the lane to the morning

He proved it on the conventional in the maiden breaker; valid excuse in the Lewis when clipping heels, but his last pair leave much to be desired; and you don't really want to come into this race at anything other that at
