01 Book Report No __ Title Author Publisher Year of publication Main topics / content Materials Development in Lnguage Brian Tomlinson Cambridge University Press 2nd edition 2011
This book is a compilation of fifteen articles by renowned scholars in ELT and mainly discusses what can be done to improve the suitability of materials for the teaching and learning of second languages. Moreover the book goes over definitions of materials, their development and systematic evaluation,

and its relation with research on SLA. Furthermore, the book presents a set of principles that should govern our decisions when choosing materials. Finally, it addresses teachers and students wants and beliefs, and brings up the importance of collaboration among all the stakeholders involved in materials development, namely: classroom teachers, researchers, university lecturers, teacher trainers, textbook writers and publishers.

What I liked

The compilation itself. By not being a single-handedly written, it provides a richer view and insight on materials development. Also the fact that this book seems to be written in plain English makes it even more compelling.

Weaknesses

Seems to be too heavily focused on todays textbooks weaknesses in addressing different learning styles,

rather than showing ways in which this can be catered for.

Relevance to the MEN TDP Course and state school teachers in your region. My overall impression

Not relevant to my context

Its a must-read, must-have.
