WHAT IS GPS ?

GP S

A global navigation satellite system consisting of 24 satellites & their associated ground stations which is used to calculate your position. Satellites are placed in MEO at nominal altitude of 20,000 Km with an orbital inclination of 55 degree.

SPACE SEGMENT

Consists of atleast 24 satellites (21 active + 3 active spares) is the heart of the system. The satellites are arranged in their orbits so a GPS receiver on earth can always receive from atleast four of them at any given time.

5/4/12

CONTROL SEGMENT

Controls the GPS satellites by tracking them & providing them with corrected orbital & clock information. Including 4 monitor stations & 1 master control station.

5/4/12

MONITOR STATIONS
Constantly receive data from the satellites & then send that information to master control station.

Master control station

Corrects the satellite data & together with two other antenna sites, sends the information to the GPS satellites.

5/4/12

USER It consists of receivers that decode the signals from the satellites. SEGMENT

Military. Search and rescue. Disaster relief. Surveying. Marine, aeronautical and terrestrial navigation. Remote controlled vehicle and robot guidance.
