Everyone has a stocking whether its hung by the chimney (with care) or draped in a favorite sitting spot. Adults and children alike delight in the surprises that can be found in the bottom of a special stocking. Asa child our stockings were often our father’s woolen socks—nothing as beautiful as one of these. We found oranges and delightful inexpensive trinkets in those simple stockings that probably wouldn't satisfy lots of children today. But we still looked forward to finding whatever was there. Project Notes All of the stockings shown in this pattern book are made using the same basic stacking pieces. The stocking fronts are made using different appliqué patterns or pieced methods, but each stocking is assembled in the same way with a few exceptions which are noted with the individual patterns. Choose the pattern you want to try first and read through the instructions, You will be referred back to these General Instructions as necessary to complete cach stocking. Embellishments are added to each stocking, but you might like to use some ideas of your own—don’t be afraid to be creative! Fabric & Batting * 1/3 yard stocking fabric (specific fabric noted with individual patterns) + 1/3 yard lining fabric + 1/3 yard batting Supplies and Tools + All-purpose thread to match fabrics + 8" (5/i6") gold metallic or other cording * 1/4 yard fusible transier web (optional) * Basic sewing tools and supplies and water-erasable marker or pencil Hand-Appliqué Instructions 1. Prepare patterns for stocking, heel and toe pieces. Note: Heel and toe pieces may nol be necessary Jor your chesen patters. Refer to individual patteras. Cut as direct- ed on each piece for lining and stocking front Note: lndividual instructions state color aed fabric from sohich to ext stocking, eel and te pieces 2. Prepare templates for appliqué shapes using pat tems given. Appliqué motifs with layered pieces are given as one numbered motif. The circled numbers indicate order of appliqué. Add a 1/4"=1/8" seam allowance to each appliqué piece when cutting for hand applique. 3. Transfer all detail lines, overlap lines and marks conte fabric patches using a water-erasable marker or pencil 4. Center design motif on the right side of the stock- ing front piece, starting with piece 1; pin in place. Continue pinning pieces in numerical order, over- lapping as necessary. Where one piece is over- lapped by another, itis not necessary 1 turn under a seam allowance on the bottom piece Baste in place, if necessary, to secure. 5. Beginning with piece 1 and turning under the seam allowance as you sew, hand-stitch around cexges using matching thread to secure to back- ‘ground. Continue stitching pieces in place in numerical order. 6. When all pieces are secure, add detail embroi- dery and embellishments as directed with indi- vidual patterns Machine-Appliq Note: You will ned to purchase approximately sla yard of fusible transfer web for each stocking for machine appliqué. 11 not imcluded in the list of materia’ and sup- plies giver with cach patter because the stockings shown tvere all hand-appliquéd. These instmclions are gives for those sitchers who would prefer faster methods Prepare templates for each appliqué shape 2. Reverse and trace each shape on the paper side of fusible transfer web. Cut our shapes leaving a mar- gin around each shape 3. Fuse paper shapes to the wrong side of fabrics as directed on pattern pieces for color. 4. Cut out fabric patches on traced lines, remove paper backing, 5. Layer pieces on right side of stocking front in ‘numerical order; fuse in place referring to the manufacturer’ instructions. 6. Using all-purpose threads to match fabrics, machine satin-stitch around each shape to hold ia. place, Note: Rayon or decorative threads may be used for achine applioué, or eliminate siching and outline edges vith liquid thread or glter paint to cover raw edges. 7.
