For places which form a group (so it's a plural noun): The Netherlands, The West Indies... 6. Rivers, seas, oceans, deserts, group of mountains: the River Thames, the Mediterranean Sea, The Atlantic Ocean, The Sahara, The Pyrenees... 7. Describing where exactly in a country: Marseille is in the south-east coast of France, Andalusia is in the south of Spain.

NO ARTICLE --> 1. To make generalisations with: a. plural nouns: Trousers are warmer than skirts. Books are better than TV. b. uncountable nouns: Progress is possible. Rice is white.
