Herbes de Provence

Objective
To introduce the region of Provence. To use cardinal directions in French. To observe plant growth. To describe and communicate about plants in French.

Materials
For planting: Pots, herbs, soil Map of France Internet

Procedures/Activities
Have each student look at a map of France and locate provence. If the map is a handout, have students make an indication on the map with a star. Discussion questions: 1. Cest au nord?, a lest?, etc. Have students label the compass rose in French. Have students collect pictures of Provence and create a collage. Have students locate a Provence tourism website and create a list of sights they might like to see if they were to visit the region. Have students nd out what herbs are part of Herbes de Provence, and have students bring in one of the herbs listed. Planting: Have students draw and label a plant in French. Introduce students to vocabulary relevant to planting (soil, sun, water, etc.) As a class or working in groups have students plant the herbs in soil. Once they are planted they can track the growth of the plants, keep a class chore schedule for watering, dry some herbs, etc.
