UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT BERKELEY DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING ME 185 P. M. NAGHDI’S NOTES ON CONTINUUM MECHANICS 2001 Preface (1924-1994) for a first course on ‘These classnotes were developed by Professor Paul M. Nai ical Engineering Department con- continuum mechanics, which has been offered in the Mec! tinuously since 1960. It was originally listed as ME289A, "Foundations of the Theory of Con- tinuous Media 1," but after a few years became ME185, "Introduction to Continuum Mechan- ics." The course offers a concise, rigorous, elegant, and general treatment of the mechanics of deformable continua. The enroliment has traditionally been incoming graduate students plus some advanced undergraduates. ‘These notes first appeared in hand-written mimeographed form and were subsequently typewrit- ten, and later digitized.
