Spread Spectrum allows 64 times as much interference to be tolerated as if the data had not been spread. Each user has,(1 special unique code word assigned for the duration DI:f the transmission on that cell channel.

CDMA introduction
« Transmits on all frequencies all the time so all the
users interfere
« Each uses a dedicated code given to them by the
transmitter to enable the receiver to pick out its
intended signal from all the other interfering
signals.CDMA/FDD or TDD

IS-95 and 3G SystemsCDMA principles-1
Starting with the data to be sent with bit rate of say
16Kbits/s
Each bit is multiplied by a unique code which, for
example, might be 64 bits long. So for:-
— Data bit=1 the 64 bit code word is sent
— Data bit =0 the inverted code word is sent
A large amount of redundancy has now been added
and the data rate is now 1024Kbits/s
This signal is now transmitted and so uses 64 times
the bandwidth needed for sending using FODMA
We have thus spread the spectrum.
