World First: Gas Combustion Unit Training for LNG Carriers

In response to customer needs, a new training product has been launched by Hamworthy Combustion aimed at LNG tanker operators using onboard Gas Combustion Units (GCUs). The GCU Training Course has been designed to maximise the competence of GCU operators and maintenance technicians and will lead to immediate benefits in terms of: Reduced downtime Reduced maintenance costs Improved safety Compliance with legislation Rapid growth in global LNG markets has created strong demand for specialist LNG carriers. The GCUs fitted on these vessels play a vital role in their overall performance, both in operational and safety terms. Operationally the units are fired to dispose of excess boil off gas (BOG) when re-liquefaction or power demand is unavailable. They also operate as emergency flare stacks to safely relieve cargo tank overpressures. The Hamworthy Combustion GCU Training Course is delivered at our Combustion Technology Centre (CTC), one of the largest combustion test facilities in the world. Located at Poole in England, the CTC includes the worlds only full-size GCU test rig. This allows course participants the unique opportunity of hands-on experience in related burner, valve, flare scanner, igniter, burner management and safety systems. This hands-on experience is backed by classroom sessions to give an ideal blend of practical and theoretical learning.
