Exchange calculation
The average time required for an exchange procedure can be determined by calculating the mean plasmatic volume (VP). An average plasma exchange is 1.5- 2 times the plasma volume of the patient. The Plasma Volume (VP*) is calculated as follows: VP = (W x Blood vol.) - [1-(Ht% x 0.91)] W = body weight Ht = haematocrit where Mean Blood Volume = 70 ml/kg adult
Example: Plasma exchange for a 70 kg man with Ht% = 45%. VP = (70x70) x [1-(0.45 x 0.91)] = 2893.45 ml = ~2.9 litres plasma volume

Procedure: Plasma Exchange at twice plasma volume means 5.8 litres of exchange is required (2x2.9l) At a blood flow of 100ml/min and a filtration rate at 25ml/min (or to keep TMP < 50mmHg), the time needed for the procedure is 5800/25 = 232 min (= ~4 hours).
