European Union (abbreviated EU bloc) is a political and economic union of 27 European countries. It is a separate legal entity with powers to act independently of its constituent countries within the given powers by the latter. Its status is regulated by the Treaty on European Union (TEU) and the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU), effective December 1, 2009

Constant attempts to unite the various European nations prior domestically. 3000 years ago with the power of the sword over Europe dominated by the Celts and the Romans after them. Empire of Charlemagne and Holy Roman Empire for hundreds of years together under a weak control large areas of the continent. In more recent times, the customs union territories under Napoleonic rule in the early 19th century and the invasion of Nazi Germany in the 40 years of 20 century, are examples of transient association of significant parts of Europe

Currently there are 27 European Union Member States. EU extends over an area of 4,325,675 km and has over 490 million citizens. If the European Union was a country he would be the seventh area (after Russia, Canada, China, Brazil, USA and Australia) and the third most populous (after China and India) country in the world.
