I have compiled a ton of information for you, so you don't need to spend hours and hours searching, researching and comparing websites. I have done it all for you. Congratulate yourself! A person could spend a week trying to locate software and get very confused from all the hype, features, system requirements, and worst of all-- the LACK of information some sites "display" -- or rather, don't display. And, if youre a newbie just learning what all the video jargon means--yikes! You have just saved yourself weeks and weeks worth of hard work and time by buying this book! Congratulate yourself again!
LETS GET ONE THING STRAIGHT
I wrote this guide to help you find FREE VIDEO EDITING SOFTWARE that you can download right now, period. I included every known video editing software that I could find. I did not include any affiliate links. I did NOT include software you get for "free" after you buy something. I did not include online editing subscription services. I did not include free software that requires a credit card before you can download it. I don't include software that doesn't have an English language version. Nor did I include any image or audio editing software. I didn't even include video players, converters, rippers, burners, cleaners, encoders, joiners, splitters, trimmers, or changers. So let's move on....
WHAT VIDEO EDITING SOFTWARE is AND WHAT IT isn't
While I appreciate the stunning amount of video software on the Internet, most of these programs that are sold or listed as 'video editing software' on the shareware sites are simply mislabeled. I did not include the dozens of video software programs that specialize in anything other than editing. (For example, video players, converters, rippers, burners, cleaners, encoders, joiners, splitters, trimmers, and video "changers" are not video editing software.)

Why isn't a video "trimmer" an editing tool?Because video editing is so much more than trimming. Yes, video editing does involve playing, converting, ripping, burning, encoding, splitting, joining, and trimming-- all of them! But true blue video editing software also comes with video transitions (a visual effect between two video clips like a dissolve, and a fade to black), a title tool (a feature allowing you to make movie credits-i.e. written words or symbols on the video), and preferably some video and audio effects, and many softwares include music generation, sound effects, VCD and DVD menus! And the number one thing video editing software should do is to help you get video into and out of your computer.
BACKGROUND INFO
I have been using digital video editing systems since 1989, and I am truly appreciative of all the new software on the market today! When I graduated with my Radio-TV-Film degree in 1990, I actually considered getting a $60,000 bank loan -- just to buy SVHS tape-to-tape editing equipment (just imagine recording from one VCR to another VCR and you understand "tape-to-tape.") I am so glad I did not go into debt then! Instead, I went to work for people who literally spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on video editing equipment and then paid me to operate them. It's truly mind boggling to think about the amount of money one needed back then to create and distribute video content. Today, a mere 14 years later, I can download a variety of free software that operates on all the new computers and does 10,000% MORE than that old SVHS equipment I had considered buying.
IS IT FREE OR A FREE TRIAL?
Most free software is available so you can "try before you buy." But several programs are completely free. Some companies may limit the functions that a trial version can perform, but many don't.Whether youre getting a freeware or a shareware (free trial) its still free and so I have included both in this guide. It should be no surprise to anyone that free software does lead to more sales. Companies know that people are hesitant to spend money on
something they may not like. So, giving away free software helps you, and helps them. (Marketing tip: freeware and shareware [free trials] also help companies to promote products without having to pay for advertising, and, they lower product returns by unsatisfied customers.)

WHICH ONE SHOULD I CHOOSE?
Its important to know which one is best for you BEFORE you spend time downloading and learning a new and complicated piece of software. Video editing is the most demanding thing you can ask your computer to do, and sometimes it bites back! Don't waste time on the wrong software for you or your computer. Ask yourself these basic questions first: What type of Operating System (O/S) will I be editing on? All Im asking here is -- will you be editing on a Mac, Windows, or Linux computer? All video editing software is O/S specific-- but some companies do make their software available for both Mac and Windows. Which version of my O/S do I have? Win95? Win 98SE? WinXP? Etc. You will also need to know the answer to this question before you can effectively choose the right software. Most software programs are made to run on several different versions of an O/Sbut there are a few made now for just one--Windows XP. What do I want to do with it? Edit home movies? If you answer "yes", then any "consumer level" editing software is right for you. Create video art or music videos? If you answer yes, you will probably want to pick a software that has more than two video tracks, and comes with a lot of video effects and transitions. Produce audio stories for radio? Of course you can do this! And if you answered yes, then you will want to choose a software that allows for an unlimited amount of audio tracks, and comes with audio effects. Generate a film negative cut list or --don't feel EDL for a post house? If you don't understand this question bad-- you're nomissing anything "fun". If you answered yes", you will t need to buy a more expensive "professional level" software that has these specialty features. What do I want to do with my projects? Put them on a website? If you answered yes", you are very lucky, as almost every software will make web friendly file formats, like RM, WMV and MOV. You should focus on the "export format" feature of each software in my "detailed features list." Copy them back on to a camera or VCR? Most software will do this, but not all. So if you want to send Grandma a VHS copy of your movies, you need to pay attention to the "input/output devices" and "trial version limitations" in my "detailed features list".
Create movies on interactive DVD's? Again, many software programs will, but not all. And some free versions won't allow this function to work. Look closely at the "Burn to Disc?" feature in the "detailed features" lists, and for listings under "trial version limitations". Do I want the most popular brand? For some people, buying the most popularly used software is important. But these aren't always the best software programs for everyone--especially considering the wide range of options one has today. There are many under dogs that are just as good, and sometimes better. My charts and lists won't compare popularity, but you can look for any "consumer awards" that may be posted on a company's website. Or look through a popular video magazine, like Video Maker, that you can buy at any newsstand or grocery store. Do I want the most professional brand? Professional. Now thats a term worth mentioning. IF your desire is to have a career as a Professional Video OR Film Editor, then choose Avid software. After purchasing Avid, go buy Final Cut Pro for $999. Don' forget to t purchase your new Apple computer while you're at it. Most professional Editors are experienced on Mac first, and Windows last. Professional Editors always make sure they look the part, so don't skimp on the newest flat screen display monitors. In addition, professional Editors use dual display for their computer monitors in order to have more workspace--so get two of the newest display monitors. Your wardrobe doesn't matter to your clients --but snacks and a large comfy couch do--and most important...the name of the editing software you use. (**Important Note: One may create professionally edited videos using any software. Editing is a creative art where one's talent is always visible. But if your dream is to make a career of it, then do as I suggest above.) If I like my consumer level software, and I am willing to spend money on a prosumer or professional level upgrade that allows me to do more things is this an option? Very good question. And the answers can be found in my detailed features lists. Its very important to note, however, that many consumer level software manufacturers dont make prosumer or professional level software. And of those who do, more often than not, that "upgrade" has a completely new interface. The customer should be prepared to learn a new interface when they upgrade from consumer level.
What type of technical support is important to me? Phone? Email? User Forums? You are so SMART for asking this question! Everyone needs technical support once in a while. What type of support do you prefer? Most companies now offer do-it-yourself online FAQS and database searches for free. Many also offer User Forums where other customers help each other. Most companies also have email support, but answers back from tech support may take 24 hours or more and may not answer your questions completely. Most companies also offer technical support by phone but is it a toll free number? Is their support number based in another country? Is their phone number easily accessible on their website? What are their typical hold times?
Technical support for video editing software by phone is, more often than not, discouraged by the software company. Most companies prefer you look up issues yourself or ask your peers. Hey! They spend enough training their staff, they don't need
to be training you too! ;) Like I said, video editing can really put the screws to your computer-- especially the older ones, and short ones, the cream colored ones, and certainly all laptops!
Is the availability of plug-ins, and free media important to me? You bet it is. Plug-ins are software that work seamlessly with your video editing software, but are made by a completely different company than the one who made your editing software. Having the option to buy more transitions, filters and effects, music, sound effects, title templates, DVD templates-- are very good options to have! Your creative choices can literally explode with the help of plug-ins. Free media (video, audio, images) that comes with your software saves you time and money. Imagine --freeee music, sound effects, background images, animations, video footage, disc menu motion backgrounds and buttons, as well as templates for titles and disc menus --are all at your finger tips. If these things didn't come with your software...where would you find them? And how much would you pay?

HOW DO I DOWNLOAD ONE?

Click on the link I provided you. If you aren't taken directly to a download page, box, or section, then look for a download or trial button or link, then click on that. (If applicable, give name and email.)

Once the download area appears, click on the most appropriate link for download. For example, choose either the Mac or the Windows version. A "Save As" box will appear and you must select a location on your computer to save the file. Then hit "Save". Most often people will select their desktop or their folder called "My Documents." The location where you save your free software doesnt affect its installation process. The main thing to remember is the name of the file and the location where you saved it. I always create a new folder called free video software under C:/My Documents, and save my free software thereso I dont forget where I downloaded it if I ever need to reinstall it.
HOW DO I INSTALL ONE?
Some software arrives as a zip file, and some arrives directly as a selfextracting application file (.exe file.) Unzip any zipped files. (If you need to, get WinZip software here http://winzip.com/. Click on "Download Evaluation Version.") Once that is done, all you need to do is double click the ".exe" file. The software will start the installation process and put all files in the best location for it on your computerthis is usually the under C:/Programs (for Windows users.) And I discovered some self-install directly under C:/.

WHERE THE HECK DO I GET THEM?!
Right here, of course! Just knowing you won't have to spend hours culling through misleading and mislabeled links on search engines ah, feels good! Like you, I couldnt believe just HOW MANY links out there took me to sites that, one had nothing to do with video EDITING software, and, two had nothing free online, anywhere! The treasured list is coming up! BUT I highly recommend you read the rest of this book before you decide which software to download first. You may need a specific feature to create your ideal video. And reading this book will save you precious time downloading and learning the wrong software. If you are one of the lucky ones who bought this book first before attempting your own search you rule! NOTE: Software companies are constantly in a state of change. This is also true for their websites as well as their products. So please, if any link below is not active - don't panic just go to the company website and look for their "free trials" or "free downloads" area. THE TREASURE LIST!

Consumer Level Consumer level video editing software requires much less time to learn and their interfaces are, generally, more intuitive than their more expensive and complex siblings --professional and prosumer. The term "consumer" in this case describes the average customer who knows nothing about video editing or knows very little about it. It's important to note that many innovations in today's prosumer and professional level software were actually borrowed from the newer user-friendly consumer level software. The following software programs are all easy to learn, inexpensive, consumer level software. MovieMaker 2 FREE RATING: VV A must-have for Windows XP users. It's horribly simple and free, free, free! The title templates rock!

It is not programmed to stop working. It has a very similar design as Movie Maker 2, but is better in some ways. It contains a few really nice features that are worth having as additional tools. Prosumer Level Professional+Consumer=Prosumer, get it? A person who buys a prosumer level software is likely a dedicated video hobbyist, technical sadist, creative artist, or small business owner. This level of software is more complex and expensive than the consumer level software, but has fewer features and is less expensive than the professional level software. Because of recent changes in technology, most prosumer software has been elevated into the professional realm. MediaStudio Pro (v. 7) FREE TRIAL RATING: VVVVV Wonderful traits of this software include the various audio functions (including audio filter/effects), Video Paint, and vector-based character generation for titles. Professional Level Professional level software programs are typically the most expensive and complex of all the video editing brethren. Comfortable knowledge of their interface can be rewarded with lucrative payola. This level of software is for people who earn their living editing video projects for TV, feature films, or corporate clients. It is also for dedicated film hobbyists, and independent filmmakers who need to create film negative cut lists. Avid Free DV (v.1.3) FREE RATING: VVV A must have for all you guys and gals wanting to make movies and videos for a living! Professional Editors gotta know how to work an Avid, period. The upside--it's free! Gathering this information for just one software program can take several hours of dedicated searching. So, in effect, what you have access to on the following pages, has saved you literally weeks worth of time and frustration. FREE OR TRIAL: FREE RATING: VV OPINION: A perfect tool for the novice who has Windows XP! It's easy, fre, and e intuitive. The functions are so easy to carry out due to their drag and drop, one-size fits all, features. Transition lengths are adjustable, but transition 'looks' are not. Same with the video effects --they are fixed and dont allow you to customize or change them. Just about everyone can easily find their way around this tool without reading the manual. My main complaint -give us more formats to choose when outputting movies instead, of the ONE made by and for Microsoft's Windows Media Player.Can we say, "dominatrix"? FREE OR TRIAL: FREE TRIAL RATING: VV OPINION: A nice visual interface that accesses your computer's hard drive contents in every media section. Slightly confusing for a novice. I understand needing access to your hard drive contents to pick out video, image and music files, but the way this software does it just irks me a little. I'd really like to have visual icons representing only the accessible files on my computer, rather than showing me every file I have on my hard drive. This software's bigget drawback is having no way to output video back s onto tape. (Yes, I understand the software is living up to its main purpose and name -but since it took the trouble to allow video IN, why not let us get it out?) And I was not impressed by the complete lack of audio on their demo project--a big oversight, and one that should be corrected. Just how exciting are hot video effects over silence? Not as hot as they could be! Its video archiving features are quite elaborate. I did not try these, as my main focus is editing ability. But it has several archiving functions built in for skipping commercials and improving audio and picture quality sounds wonderful though. A must try for the home movie buff looking to convert VHS tapes to DVD. FREE OR TRIAL: FREE TRIAL RATING: VVV OPINION: A very nice trial version. Similar to Premiere 6.5 in visual interface and timeline style but less complex. It has some wonderful video effects and transitions, and they are all adjustable--in fact, these adjustable transitions and video effects are one very big way this software sets itself apart from its competitors! It may only have 13 basic scene transitions, but considering you can change several characteristics of each transition-- that exponentially increases the number of transitions and effects the customer is given! It also has the picture in picture effect (they call it a transition) which is almost always omitted by other consumer level software. Other really cool features are the "jpg wipe" and bitmap titles! I turned a photo of a dog into a wipe transition -it was truly unique and wonderful to see! This simple feature really adds a ton of value onto this simple affordable software! The other cool feature is that titles are saved as text friendly, universal format -bitmap files. I was disappointed in the capture area of this software. The options for the user were scattered over so many windows and buried options that an average user would easily be confused and discouraged. The first sign I knew something was awry in this area was when I saw two separate function options that are usually integrated: controlling your camera and recording from your camera. But the capture function DOES have varying degrees of resolution for video and audio, and a variety of file formats. Its closer to being a super advanced movie generator than a video editing software. I say this because the editing is automated by the software according to which "style" you choose. Attempting a linear narrative style movie on this software is NOT advised because there are limited editing controls, no timeline, and no tracks. You do have control over the order of clips and pictures, the editing style, selection of clip highlights and exclusions for muvees artistic intelligence, choosing the relative volume between music and video audio, and what the opening and ending titles say. VERY simple. Depending upon the editing style chosen, your movie may include animations, flashes of color, video frames or borders, wipes, pans, zooms, and video effects -all generated automatically and added to your video and pictures. I'm fascinated by this softwa because it somehow interprets re music files, and places edits and motion moves exactly on the music tempo and rhythm. The only thing really missing from this cute automated muvee maker (aside from the fact that you can't make intricate edit decisions) is the ability to generate its own music. It is free, but the online manual is in a zip file... The help menu is barely any help. It is one of the few programs still available for Windows 95 users. There aren't any "player controls". One must select a video file and move the mouse to the "source menu" pull down options and then select "play" to play it. AND one must also transform their multi-layered movie into a video file (called rendering) before watching it. No realtime previews here. I certainly do give the manufacturers credit for making their software, free. I am also intrigued that they have top billing for "free video editing software" searches in Google. I ran across this editor some time back, and thought it so rough to use I didn't even include it in my first version of this ebook. After a multitude of sales, I found many people had tried to use this software, so in it goes. Live and learn. A newbie would do well to stay away from this software. Screen Capture Editing Software Screen capture software captures the image on your computer screen-either a small part or the whole screen. Screen capture software does NOT capture from video cameras. Screen capture software does NOT allow the traditional video manipulation --like video effects and 3D transitions-- that are the iron center of traditional video editing software. The vast majority of video editing software programs need to work with video files (imported or captured) that have 30 frames per second (29.97 to be exact for NTSC standard). Screen capture software programs are preset to capture at a lower frame rate, usually 15 frames per second. One can usually set the capture preferences to capture at 30 frames per second, but I have found difficulty in doing so. It's very stressful on one's computer! I have included this category of video editing software due to the confusion people have expressed over differences in this type of editing software and a traditional video editing software. VIDEO JARGON (that I use in this book)

AUDIO EFFECTS Effects you apply to audio: music, narration, sounds, ambience, etc. The effects can be reverb, pitch, echo, and many more. These effects are usually applied by a drag-and-drop method. The availability of and number of audio effects depends upon the software you choose. AUDIO FILE When audio is recorded (captured) by a computer, that audio is transformed into a digital file, called a sound or audio file. Common audio file formats are .wav and .mp3. Video editing software programs differ in the number and type of audio formats they allow to be imported, as well as, exported. AUDIO FUNCTIONS Functions that a video editing software is capable of doing. Some examples include: music generation, real-time mixing, timeline narration recording, audio cd ripping, key frameable effects, volume graphs, volume level bars, volume level nodes, etc. Audio functions available vary in variety and number from software to software. AUDIO TRACK A main feature in video editing software. The audio tracks are where you carry out your audio (sound) edit decisions. The location where you place your sound/audio clips, including sound effects, narration and music. The more audio tracks your software has, the more sounds your video can play all at once. For example, if your software gives you three audio tracks you can add background music and rifle sounds as your grandfather recalls his war experience--kind of like a documentary. But if your software only gives you one audio track, you'll have to choose between your grandfather, the background music, or the rifle shots. AUTOMATIC SCENE DETECTION Automatic scene detection "sees" your captured or imported video file and divides it into "clips" or "scenes" based on the content within it. It is a time saving feature. The detection of scenes is NOT a physical one--your original captured video file remains intact as one file. A lot of software doesn't have this function. Some software will allow you to choose how you want your scenes to be detected. You can choose to automate scene

detection by: camera date and time; a specific time interval like every 5 minutes; record start points; or you can choose to turn this feature OFF. BUNDLED Refers to software being "sold with" additional software or hardware. You buy both for one price. CAMCORDER I think we all know this one, but just so we're all on the same page....it's also called a camera, or video camera. Camera+Recorder=Camcorder. A recording device that records moving images onto a tape or internal disk. An older term, video cassette recorder (VCR), was more common when all video cameras recorded onto a cassette of some type. CAPTURE Capturing is usually the first step in making a video editing project. Capturing video is the process of transferring video from a camcorder to your computer, usually onto the hard drive of your computer. Capturing use to be referred to as digitizing. Video is usually captured in the .avi video file format, the highest resolution video file format, and the most common. BUT some software captures video in a proprietary file format which can't be imported or used by other video editing software brands. CONSUMER A consumer level video editing software that requires much less time to learn, and in which the interfaces are generally more intuitive than their more expensive and complex siblings--professional and prosumer. Also, many innovations in today's prosumer level editing software were actually borrowed from the newer user-friendly consumer level software. Yes! You heard me correctly! This term is also inherently a derogatory term for a customer. The term refers to what customers "do" to products as a group, instead of the benefits they bring to products and companies. It is a designated "level" of customer referring to "the average person" who is neither experienced nor a professional. DIRECTX COMPATIBLE "...the core Windows technology that drives high-speed multimedia and games on the PC" (and video editing software). Direct X is a free

software that you can easily download from a variety of sites including Microsoft. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx "Some video card manufacturers have updated drivers that are specifically designed to work with DirectX 9.0. It's possible thathese drivers will t benefit performance, quality, or stability of games running DirectX 9.0. Please make sure you check with your video card manufacturer to see if such drivers exist for your video card." For more DirectX answers go here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx?url=/windows/direct x/productinfo/faq/default.htm In short, if you have a computer that came with Windows 98 or higher, you probably already have a video (graphics) card that is compatible with DirectX. But your new software may require the LATEST version of DirectX. Mac users don't need DirectX. DISC Several types of discs exist: CD, VCD, SVCD , miniCD, and DVD. Video editing software programs differ in the types of discs they make. And some don't make discs! Some allow the customer to only output to discs and not tapes! DISK SPACE This refers to hard disk space-- your hard drive. Not to be confused with other drives like floppy, CD, DVD, or zip. Usually calculated in Megabytes (MB) and Gigabytes (GB) with GB being the largest. Most drives these days can contain 40GB's or more of data. Video software requires lots of disk space for video and audio files--usually in Gigabytes (GB). They also require installation disk space on your hard drive. Most installations require Megabytes of disk space, not Gigabytes. DOWNLOAD FILE SIZE The size of the freeware or shareware file containing the program you want to download. File size coupled with your type of Internet connection will determine the amount of time it will take to download your freeware. (Digital cable can download a 100MB file in 7 minutes. The same file downloaded using a dial-up connection could take 2 to 6 hours.)

EXPORT Export refers to getting video out of a video editing software program by creating a video file. Common export formats are AVI, MPG, WMV, MOV, and RM. Video editing software programs differ in the number and type of video formats they allow to be exported using their software. FORMAT This term can refer to a file format, a video format, or a computer format. A file format is defined by its file name "extension"-- for example, "MP3" is one type of audio file format. File formats are NOT limited to video and audio files. Video formats are identified by tape types and camera types-examples are hi-8, digital-8, VHS, and miniDV. Computer format only refers to your computer operating system--Windows, Macintosh, Linux, etc. FULL VERSION Full version software refers to a software program that doesn't have any feature limitations, like trial software does. In other words, the software is complete and fully functional. No trial time limits, no trial functionality limits, no "limited editions" or "light" versions. HARDWARE The physical components of your computer, AND the external physical devices your computer interacts with. Typical (video-related) examples of hardware are: video card, video capture card, break-out-box, camcorder, scanner, external drive, etc. IMAGE Any picture, photo, graphic, etc. Also called a still, which is short for still image. In my "detailed features" lists, image refers to IMAGE FILES. Common image file FORMATS are JPG, TIF, BMP and PIC. Video editing software programs differ from each other in the number and type of image formats they allow to be imported (recognized or seen) by their software. IMPORT IMPORT is how all software 'gets' video, audio, and images recognized by your software. They are already in a computer file format on your hard drive or on a disc. But not all file formats are recognized or imported by every software program.

INPUT INPUT is the video, audio, etc. that you "put into" your computer. A software program's capture feature allows video (and audio) from camcorders, VCR's, and a walkman -type players to be INPUT and the result is a new computer file--the most common file created by capturing is AVI. BUT not all video editing software has the capture feature--amazing but true! So, not all video editors accept input from camcorders, although most do. Some software creates files that are only recognizable by the software that captured them. These software programs are usually the very high end professional level software. INTEGRATED SOFTWARE / PLUG-INS /THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE Many video editing software programs have integrated software, known as plug-ins, made by a completely different company-- a third party company. These business arrangements usually create a win win win situation. The video editing software company wins because their product is now more attractive to customers. The plug-in company wins because they now have customers for their products. And the customers win because we have more creative options than before. For example, Studio 9 from Pinnacle has incorporated three very wonderful plug-ins into it's main software: Titles by TitleDeko, Music by SmartSound, and Transitions and video effects by Hollywood FX. So, if I owned a version of Studio 9 and I wanted MORE music options, MORE title templates, or MORE transitions and video effects then I would easily know two things: 1-- I can buy more, and 2-- where I can find more to buy. In my opinion, when a company is receptive to integrating third party software (plug-ins) into their main software, thats good. LOW RESOLUTION CAPTURE This feature comes in handy when capturing large amounts of video on a computer. A regular 40 GB hard drive will hold about 2 hours of video. But if one captured that same 2 hours of video at a vastly lower resolution, then one could capture about 128 hours MORE video onto that same 40 GB hard drive. This feature was available to the consumer level before it was available to the prosumer level. I'm serious!Studio 7 had low resolution capture capability waaaay before Final Cut Pro did. I'm serious!

MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS The minimum requirements necessary for any computer to run a specific software. Usually includes these areas: O/S, CPU speed, RAM, Disk space, sound card, and video card. MOTION EFFECTS Motion effects can also be called speed effects. Motion effects alter the original speed of the video in the timeline, not on the original file. Motion effects include slow motion, fast motion, reverse motion, and still motion. There are other effects that make a video look like it's in motion, but most software programs call those, video effects. MOVIE A video creation composed of pieces of video, film, images, sound and/or music together for the purpose of story telling. These movies are pieced together with video editing software. MULTI-LINGUAL In this book, it means the software is available in different languages in addition to English. The links in this book lead to software in the English language. To download software in a different language, one would need to download from a different link than I ones provided in this book. NTSC and PAL These are both national technical standards for video. The United States adopted the NTSC standard for video. NTSC video standard means video equipment sold in the USA records and plays video at 30 frames per second (29.97 to be exact). The PAL standard records and plays video at 25 frames per second. PAL standard is common in Europe. OPERATING SYSTEM (abbreviated as O/S) There are several operating systems. The most common by far is Microsoft's Windows and Apple's Macintosh. The version of your O/S is also important to know. Windows versions include: Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98SE, Windows ME and so on

OUTPUT Output refers to getting video out of video editing software by recording it onto a camera, CD, DVD or other external video device like a VCR. Not every video editing software has this function, but most do. PROCESSOR SPEED (also known as CPU SPEED) Commonly referred to as the CPU, the Central Processing Unit determines how fast and how many things a computer has the ability to do. CPU Speed is listed in MegaHz or GigaHz. PRODUCT ADD-ONS FOR PURCHASE These products are not required for your software, but might be useful to you, and are made by companies that have a partnership with your software company. Generally these products are things like plug-ins, media libraries, compatible hardware, and instructional material. PROFESSIONAL In this book, this term means customers who support themselves financially by editing videos for TV, feature films, or corporate clients. Professional level programs are typically the most expensive and complex of all the video editing brethren. PROSUMER This term also applies to customers who have more knowledge or are more experienced than the average customers. An example of a prosumer customer is a dedicated video hobbyist. Prosumer software is more complex and expensive than the consumer level software, but has fewer features and is less expensive than the professional level software. Professional+Consumer=Prosumer. RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY (RAM) RAM varies from computer to computer, and can be changed. Ram is hardware sitting on your motherboard inside your computer. RAM determines exactly how many things a computer can think about at one time. It is usually calculated in MBs with newer computers having 1 or 2 GB of RAM.

SOFTWARE Also, known as a computer program, or computer application. You can't see it unless it's loaded on your computer, and it costs you money unless -you bought this book. :) SOUND CARD The hardware that allows you to hear sound from your computer. Most computers also require speakers that connect to the sound card. STREAMING MEDIA Video files made to be shown from a web page or sent by email. The most common streaming media file formats are WMV, RM, and MOV. Streaming media files are usually much smaller in size than standard video files like .avi and .mpg. Streaming files tend to have lower resolutions as well. Video editing software programs differ in the number and type of streaming formats they allow to be imported and exported. TITLES Usually any words or text you see in a movie. Titles can also be made from or include images. Titles are a software-generated effect within video editing software. TRANSITIONS The most common scene transition is the dissolve. Transitions are software-generated effects you add between two clips of video or audio in the timeline. The length of the transition is usually in seconds and or frames. Most video editing software now offers real time transitions. Transitions are available in 2D and 3D. TRIAL VERSION A limited version of the full version software. The manner in which it is limited, differs from software to software. UPGRADE Works as a verb or noun. One can buy an upgrade to the latest version of their current software. One can upgrade to a more complex, versatile, and expensive product. Upgrading from one product to another product within the SAME company usually results in that company giving you a discounted price on your upgrade purchase.

VIDEO Moving images recorded onto tape, or disk and usually involves 30 images recorded per second. True NTSC video is 29.97 frames per. When we watch these stills in steady temporal succession, the still images appear to be one moving image. VIDEO CARD (GRAPHICS CARD) The hardware that helps your CPU to process complex images QUICKLY. Popular 3D animated computer games and video editing NEED high-end video cards for optimal performance. But if you're editing for the fun of -it you don't need to sweat this. My mom's 3 old cheeeap computer with -year 64MB RAM edits video. VIDEO EFFECTS Video effects are effects applied to a video clip in the editing timeline. Video effects are software generated. Common effects are strobe, color, brightness, hue, and any number of photo-style effects. The availability and number of video effects varies from software to software. I've seen earth-quake, roller coaster, and other motion type effects as well. VIDEO FILE A video file is created when capturing video. The most common video file created from the capture process is the AVI format. Video files are also created when you export your movie or video project for email or disc. The most common export video files are AVI, MPG, RM, WMV and MOV. VIDEO TRACK A main feature of video editing software. The location where you place your video clips. Most consumer level software programs have limited the number of video tracks available for you to use; this makes the software easier to learn and use. But having more video tracks gives more freedom to create multiple layered complex images. Most prosumer and professional level software programs give you unlimited number of tracks.
