    In the 1950s in Canada: 1. Politically, Canada strengthened its ties with the US as the Cold War divided the world between democratic and communist countries. Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949 and John Diefenbaker later cancelled the Avro Arrow program. 2. Socially, more than 4,000 Japanese Canadians were sent back to Japan and immigrants from Korea arrived as refugees. Pensions and bomb shelters were introduced to prepare for potential nuclear conflict. 3. Economically, industrial production and the economy grew strongly as infrastructure like the Trans-Canada Highway was developed and investments were made in defense technologies and peacekeeping forces.
