MSc Thesis

The Chair of Space Systems Engineering, Faculty of Aerospace Engineering of the TU Delft offers within the Master variant 6 Space Engineering, profile I Space Systems Engineering, the following thesis: Topic: Background: Attitude and Orbit Determination for Deep Space Probes using Pulsar Signals Pulsars are the most precise natural clocks in the universe. Pulsars are neutron stars emitting predominantly either gamma or radio waves at periods ranging from a few milliseconds up to several seconds. The radiofrequency beacon emitted by pulsars can be detected by several radio receivers onboard spacecraft. The difference in signal travel time over the spacecraft dimensions as well as the measurement of differential Doppler shift in principle allows the determination of the attitude and attitude rate as well as, when integrated over time, the orbit of the spacecraft. The characteristics of pulsars emitting radio beacons shall be determined in terms of frequencies, pulse rates, signal strength, repeatability and distribution of pulsars on the celestial sphere. As a next step, a link analysis shall be performed determining the size of necessary radio antennas onboard spacecraft. The theoretical foundation for the measurement principle and the observation geometry shall be worked out. The requirements for differential signal travel time and Doppler shift shall be derived from basic attitude and orbit accuracy requirements. Finally, a design of electronic reception system for satellites shall be developed which allows the determination of differential signal travel times and Doppler shift. Optionally, a ground test setup can be developed. Candidates should be interested in spacecraft attitude and orbit determination sensors and have a background in communications and electrical engineering. The work will be conducted in cooperation with the chair of Astrodynamics and Satellite Systems and the faculty of Electrical Engineering of the TU Delft.
