Student Outcome Assessment Procedure (Fall 2011 SMW) We have 11 Student Outcomes (previously known as Program Outcomes) that

t are assessed in multiple courses over a 2 year staggered time frame. The following is a brief guide to how you should assess outcomes 1 & 2 in your course. Supporting documents are (1) SO 1&2 rubric, (2) data sheet, and (3) assessment summary form. Assessing Outcomes 1 & 2 1. Determine how you will assess the outcome. For instance, Student Outcomes 1 & 2 (breadth & depth) are often assessed using final exam problems. Knowing what performance indicators you are looking for in the assessment rubric can help you craft suitable final exam problems. a. How many problems should be assessed? In ELEC 3320, 3 problems are chosen where we are also looking to assess how well we are covering the Course Objectives (those listed in the ABET course syllabus). This is information we use in the stem for course improvement. b. Notice on the SO 1&2 rubric the performance indicator 4. Other. This is an optional indicator specific to the course. For instance, for assessment of ELEC 3320 final exam problems we include a Vectors performance indicator. In ELEC 5100, Probability Concepts is the additional indicator. c. Consider Performance Indicator 1. Understand the problem. I gauge whether a student understands the problem by requiring a sketch of what the problem is asking for. How well a student can visualize the problem is therefore a measure of their understanding. 2. It is convenient to have students turn in their final exam problems separately, so you can have a complete stack of problem 1, for example. I also find it very convenient to have the students indicate on each problem what degree program they are in (ELEC, ECPE, WIRE, or a combination). 3. Students should be referenced by an anonymous number on the data sheet. a. I like to sort the problems into stacks based on program (ELEC, ECPE, etc.) prior to assigning student numbers. b. If a student is in ELEC and WIRE, his assessment data would be entered twice in the data sheet. 4. Score the performance indicators on the data sheet per the rubrics. 5. Rack up the PI numbers per program and enter this in the summary sheet.
