Farbod Jahan Music 28: History of Rock May 12, 2012 Group Summaries Group 4 They did their

project on music from the 1920s all the way to the 1960s. They talked about how in the 1920s there was a lot of blues in this era and most of the songs related to heartbreak. One famous artist was Cliff Edwards and he taught himself how to play the ukulele. In the 1930s there was a formation of a big band jazz in which 15-20 players performed. Some famous artists in this era included Leadbelly, Judy Gorland, and Andrew/Sisters who released 113 singles in his life. In the1940s music was related to WWII and the pain that everyone faced. 1960s had well known famous artists such as Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, and finally James Joplin. The main type of music was folk/blues which was performed in San Francisco. Group 5 In this group the members discussed the different types of people that are necessary in order for a song to be published. There needs to be a producer who works with the artist and does the track selection, the engineer who manages the sound equipment, makes mixes, add sound effects, and mixes layers to harmonize melody, and finally the artist who creates the song themselves. They also mentioned the licensing agents and how ASCAP collected $933 million and distributed $817 million to members of BMI.

Group 6 This was the final group to present and they discussed different artists such as Alicia Keyes who was born January 25, 1981 and her first recorded album which was on June 5, 2001 went platinum 5 times. The next artist was Katy Perry who grew up in a religious household and was part of her churches choir. She had her self labeled in 2004 for the first time. The final artist was Adele and she has received the most fame out of all these. She has won 6 Grammys and has won song of the year in 2012.
