Chile project- Adventures in English

Ariana Van Beurden and Kimby Murakami

Our project is an 8-week, 4 unit syllabus developed for high school students in Chile. The aim is to positively affect students communicative abilities, motivation to use English in and out of the classroom, and improve standardized test taking skills. Contentbased units focus on vocabulary building, listening and speaking skills, and learner training, helping students to develop the tools to increase awareness of learning opportunities and responsibility for their own learning and learning goals.

Program goals
Performative: As a result of participating in this unit, students will be able to: Express themselves in English in a variety of contexts Listen to and understand a variety of accents in English Understand the purpose of student-centered learning Know using English is the best way to learn English Know how culture affects language Know standardized test taking strategies and be familiar with standardized test questions Feel confident in their communicative abilities in English Be motivated to participate in communicative activities and tasks Feel positive about learning English and feel more connected to other English speakers around Cognitive As a result of participating in this unit, students will: Affective As a result of participating in this unit, students will: Metacognitive As a result of participating in this unit, students will be in a position to: Employ appropriate strategies to improve their abilities in English Know how to approach preparing for standardized tests
