Review questions for exam 3

1. Here you have to start with methyl acetate and alcohols containing no more than four carbons. You may use inorganic reagents of your choice and special organic reagents such as NBS, CF3COOOH, CH2N2, TsCl, LDA, and diethyl ether.

2. Write the products of the following reactions. Mechanisms are not necessary. A "product" is something formed in substantial yield. Some (or all) reactions may not yield a product.

3. Give structures for A, B, C, and D. Mechanisms are not necessary, but will probably help you get the right structures.

4. Draw a mechanism that explains the following reaction. And explain the following labeling data.

5. The compound can, in principle, do two intramolecular Claisen condensations (Dieckmann condensations). However, there is only one product. Show mechanisms for formation of the two possible products and explain why only one of them is formed.
