    Anne Frank was born in Germany in 1929 but her family fled to Amsterdam to escape the Nazis. At age 13, she received a diary for her birthday. She and her family went into hiding in an attic in Amsterdam for over two years during the German occupation. While in hiding, she wrote in her diary about her fears, fights with her parents, and desire to be a writer. After being discovered, she and her family were arrested and sent to concentration camps, where Anne and her sister died in 1945, just before the camps were liberated. Her father survived and later published her diary.
