Guidance for Painting Connection Bolts

Sheradised Fixings
Sheradising forms a very thin film zinc oxide (as opposed to galvanising that provides a zinc rich surface). It is therefore acceptable to wash and rinse the bolt to remove the oxide using Hempel Light Clean 99350 as per manufacturers instructions. Dry and apply intumescent basecoat within four hours (otherwise zinc oxide will reform). As part of your quality procedure, we recommend that trial adhesion check be carried out to a sample area.

Galvanised Fixings
If bolt is galvanised, it should be cleaned using Hempel Light Clean 99350 (diluted) and primed with Hempadur 15552 prior to application of intumescent.

Steel Fixings
Steel fixings can be primed using site 'touch up' primer or, if light rusting has occured, a surface tolerant primer such as Hempadur 45880 should be used prior to application of intumescent.
