FORM 2 SCIENCE CHAPTER 1

Interdependence Among Living Organisms And The Environment

Hi students, do you know what we will learn today?

Today, you will be able to; 1) state what species, population and community are.

2) State what habitat and ecosystem are.

3) identify various habitats in one ecosystem,

4) explain through examples the interdependence among living organisms and the environment to create a balanced ecosystem.

A species is a group of organisms that have same shape and structure. They can also breed together to produce offspring that are fertile.

A population is a group of organisms comprising same species that live together in a habitat.

A community consist of several species of

animal and plant population that live together and interact with one another in a habitat.

Habitat
A habitat provides an organisms with air, food, shelter, and a place in which to breed.

Plants Coconut Lotus Durian Cactus

Habitat Beach Pond Garden Desert

Animals Snake

Habitats Grass

Shark
Crocodile Millipede

Sea
River Earth

An ecosystem consist of several communities that interact with one another and with the physical environment consist of living or biotic components and non-living or abiotic components. The biotic components in an ecosystem are plants, animals and microorganisms. non living things such as water, air, soil, light and mineral salts.

Pond Ecosystem

Interdependence Of Living Organism And The Environment

Living things interact with each other and with non-living things lead to balance in an ecosystem.

The interaction between living

things and non-living things lead to balance in an ecosystem.

Example : in a mangrove, the crabs and mudskippers interact with other organisms such as trees and other plants, as well as physical factors such as water level, amount of salt and sunlight.

Plants depend on water, sunlight and soil to grow Animals eat plants as their food Animals also eat other animals for food When living organisms die, microorganisms decompose their bodies Decomposed organisms give back nutrients to the soil Plants use these nutrients for food
