Introduction
The shipbuilding industries in Malaysia are involved in:
1. designing, 2. building, construction and fabrication, 3. converting of vessel, and upgrading of vessels as well as
marine equipment manufacturing.

Third Industrial Master Plan (IMP3) addresses


shipbuilding industry is part and parcel of the marine transport sub-sector of the larger transport equipment industry. Regulation in accordance with the international standards (ISO) and the local regulations.

Malaysian Shipbuilding History


Shipbuilding industry in Malaysia has existed
since the 1900s. The earliest Malaysian shipyard was built at Kuching Sarawak. Currently there are about 120 registered shipyards in Malaysia.

Malaysian Shipbuilding Cluster


1. East Malaysia Cluster:

Products: offshore supply, tug, barge and river ferry. Cost: most cost-effective, dynamic and viable exporter. Market: its proximity market is the oil and gas sector. Location: along Rajang River, in clusters near Sungai Bidut and Rantau Panjang, in Sibu and Kuala Baram in Miri.
Products: both steel and aluminum vessel buildings Cost: not cost-effective and viable exporter. Market: no experience outside government projects. Location: Lumut, Perak; Port Klang, Selangor; Kemaman, Terengganu and Pasir Gudang, Johor.
