In Qur'anic recitation there are rules that apply to the pronunciation of certain letters.

The rules are applied to the letters depending upon what vowel they bea r, what vowel they precede or follow and what the letter they precede or follow. Such rules do not necessarily apply to the conventional Arabic language; the ru les specifically apply to the science of Quranic recitation. In this and followi ng chapters, such rules will be treated as they affect the pronunciation of the Quranic wordings; the first being the rule of Izhaar. The word Izhaar derived from the Arabic word Izhaar meaning manifestation or bri nging out something clearly to the open. Technically, Izhaar is the pronunciatio n of a letter with the sound of its vowel, clearly, from its outlet without Gunn ah. The rule of Izhaar is applied when the letter with a Sukuun vowel or any let ter with a Tanwiin is followed by the letters Hamza, Haa,' Ayn, Ghayn, Haa, or Kha a. In applying the rule of Izhaar the letter Nuun with Sukuun vowel or the lette r with Tanwiin that precedes any of the six (6) letters, Hamza, Haa, `Ayn, Ghyn, H aa, or Khaa is to be clearly pronounced from its respective out-lets without Gh unnah.
