Tutorial — Drainage Pipe Design
Question 1
A. Using BS5572 method, calculate the diameter and gradient
of the drain pipe for a 5-storey office containing 8 WCs (9
litres), 8 basins, 2 sinks and 4 urinals on each floor.
B. Given the velocity of flow is 1 m/s at half-full bore and
Chezy constant is 55. Calculate the diameter and gradient
of the drain pipe.
Question 2
Calculate the diameter and gradient of a pipe required to carry
the run-off from an asphalt-covered car park of 100m x 30m.
Take the following factors in your calculation :
Impermeability factor = 0.875
Full bore discharge
Rainfall intensity = 150 mm/hr
Velocity of flow = 1.5 m/s
Chezy constant = 55
Juestion 3
Calculate the velocity of flow in a 100mm diameter foul-water
drain flowing at a depth equal to 3/4 of the diameter when the
gradient is 1 in 60. Chezy constant is 55.Tutorial — Drainage Pipe Design
Solution to Question 1
(A)
Discharge Units of
wc 8x 5x 14 = 560 (assuming not close coupled cistern)
Basin 8x5x3 =120
Sink 2x5x 13 =130
Total 10
Design flow =7.8 V/s
Urinal 4x5x0.15 V/s =3 V/s
Total design flow =10.8I/s
Total D.U. = 1600
From Table 8, 150mm diameter pipe at gradient 9 mm/m can
be used.
(B)
Total design flow = 10.8 I/s = 0.0108 m*/s
Q=VA=Vx IID78
D=[8xQ)/(Vx ID)”
= [(8 x 0.0108) /(1x T1)]”
=0.166m =166 mm
Chezy formula
V=C(mi)!”
m = D/4 = 0.166/4 = 0.0415
1=55 x (0.0415 x i)!”
i=8x10°=8 mm/mTutorial — Drainage Pipe Design
Solution to Question 2
Q =CIA/3600
0.875 x 0.15 x 100 x 30/3600
= 0.1094 m/s
Q =VA=VIID?/4
D =(4Q/VII)'?
=(4x 0.1094 / 1.5 x1)!”
=0.3 = 300mm
Chezy formula
V=C (mi)?
m= D/4 = 0.3/4 = 0.075
1.5 = 55 x (0.075 x i)!”
i=10x10°=10 mm/m
