4.5 Ethernet processing

There is a L2 switching for Ethernet traffic network, i.e., the Ethernet forwarding is based on MAC address. FPH800 supports up to 16K MAC address, both DIX v2 and IEEE 802.3 standards are supported for Ethernet frame. The frame length can be from 64 bytes up to 1518 bytes by standard.

The MAC address aging time is configurable from 100 seconds to 2000 seconds in step of 1 second, and the default value is 300 seconds. The MAC table is automatically learnt but it is possible for the user to configure static MAC table entries and the static entries will never be deleted by the aging function. Besides learning and matching the source and destination MAC addresses, VLAN ID is also used to determine the egress port in traffic forwarding.

4.5.1 VLAN bridging mode

FPH800 supports 3 VLAN bridging modes: Disable mode Forwarding will be only based on packets MAC address, and the packet will never be modified. 802.1q mode CVLAN based forwarding only. If an untagged packet is coming from a UNI, a CVLAN (Customer VLAN) tag will be attached to the packets at the ingress port. For NNI, if an untagged packet is received, the NNIs default VLAN ID will be attached. If a packet is going out of a UNI, it is configurable per port whether to reserve the CVLAN tag with 3 options: strip all CVLAN tag; reserve all CVLAN tag; strip only default VLAN tag. The default option is reserving all CVLAN tag. 802.1 ad mode SVLAN based forwarding only. UNI is configured as translation mode or transparent mode. In VLAN translation mode, the CVID is replaced by SVID; In VLAN transparent mode, SVLAN tag is added before old CVLAN. For untagged packet, there is no difference between translation and transparent mode. For NNI, there is no difference between translation and transparent mode
